Facebook Advertising – Start Right with the Facebook Pixel

Before you get started into the world of Facebook advertising, you need to install the Facebook pixel, but I can hear it now – “what is the Facebook pixel, you ask?” Facebook defines its pixel as follows: “The Facebook pixel is a piece of code for your website that enables you to measure, optimize and build audiences for your ad campaigns.” Essentially that means you can use the Facebook pixel  to leverage the actions people take on your website across devices to drive more effective and targeted Facebook advertising campaigns.

How to Install the Facebook Pixel on Your Website

Step 1: Create a Facebook pixel

  1. Go to your Facebook Pixel tab in Ads Manager.
  2. Click Create a Pixel.
  3. Enter a name for your pixel. You can have only one pixel per ad account, so choose a name that represents your business.
Note: You can change the name of the pixel later from the Facebook Pixel tab.
  4. Check the box to accept the terms.
  5. Click Create Pixel.

Step 2: Add the Facebook pixel to your website

  1. Go to your Facebook Pixel tab in Ads Manager
  2. Click Actions > View Pixel Code
  3. Click the code to highlight it
  4. Right-click and select Copy or use Ctrl+C/Cmd+C
  5. Click Done
  6. Go to your website’s HTML and paste the code between the “head tags”
  7. If you are using WordPress (which we recommend) use the following steps:
    1. Get your Facebook pixel ID
    2. Install the PixelYourSite plugin
    3. Open the plugin and paste the Facebook pixel ID inside the dedicated field (be careful not to paste the full code of the pixel)
    4. Scroll Down and check the Activate Plugin General Settings box
    5. Click Save Settings Button

Step 3: Confirm that the Facebook pixel is installed on your website

  1. After you’ve installed the Facebook pixel on your website, go to a web page the pixel was placed on.
  2. If it’s working, the pixel will send information back to Facebook and you’ll be able to see activity in the Facebook Pixel page in your Ads Manager.
  3. Your pixel’s status will also be set to Active.
  4. Alternatively you can install the Facebook Pixel Helper extension inside your chrome browser
  5. This extension is an awesome tool that helps you validate and troubleshoot your Facebook pixels

Now that you have the Facebook pixel installed on your site you can start tracking your site visitors and using that information to deliver specific ads or to start a remarketing campaign.
